Who doesn’t love a good old vintage synth? I know Trent Reznor does, and Kraftwerk. Daft Punk seem to use them a bit… everyone loves a synth and today, I’m sharing that love.
This one is definitely a “Get it out the door quick” One a Day taking about 15 minutes. The last few have been at least an hour in the making from concept to completion. Also, as is becoming a bit of a habit for me, I’m using textures with blend modes on the illustrations to grunge them up a bit and give them some depth.
I’m also working on a t-shirt for a specific type of crazy person which should land in the next few days!
I wanted to draw some cool looking black rimmed glasses but they looked kinda boring on their own… but add some messy hair, a funky moustache, a flannelette shirt and you’ve got yourself the almost invisible hipster… almost because he would still want people to see the rocking hair and ‘tache combo, I know I would.
I’m enjoying working with the longer canvas at the moment and I’m digging the hell out of that font I used for today and yesterday.
Radiohead are cool. They also released their latest album King of Limbs yesterday and today’s illustration is a tribute to the album and borrows from a line in the song Lotus Flower which I’d say is my favourite off the album so far.
The line you ask?
“Just to feed your fast ballooning head”. The words conjured up some really vivid images in my head and I thought they would look cool enough to get down on paper/computer. If you are interested in hearing the full song, check the YouTube clip below with ol’ Thom Yorke putting on some funky dance moves!
I’m really liking the new album but will reserve final judgement until tomorrow, I should have listened to it at least 30 times by then… I do like my Radiohead!
One whole month of The Creative Panic’s One a Days! Really didn’t think I’d last that long!
Today’s image is rather bleak and I considered not posting it seeing it was the one month milestone, but The Creative Panic is all about what I draw any given day so who am I to deny this illustrations introduction to the world.
I was reading about Sir Winston Churchill and how he suffered from depression throughout his life. He referred to the depressed feeling as his ‘black dog’ and that term is now quite widely used to describe the condition. Funnily enough as I was drawing this image, the song Dog by Andy Bull came on iTunes, the lyrics of which speak about the black dog of depression too! Crazy stuff!
Have a listen to Andy’s song in the YouTube clip below. It’s a very cool tune and features Lisa Mitchell on backing vocals (though you will be hard pressed at times to actually figure out which one of the vocalists she is as Andy has a unique voice for a guy!)
Almost forgot… Gorilla Sugar Skulls sticker comp! If you want to score one of these sweet stickers, then just comment on this post which of the 31 One a Day’s is your favourite and why. Doesn’t need to be an essay, just a few words and Ill pick 5 random replies who each get a sticker! YEW!
Well it was only a matter of time until I; a) Swore on this blog and b) drew a bike. I’m a big fan of pedal power and ride my bike(s) as much as I can. Our local cycling club is very strong for being regionally based and there is nothing better than a good race on a Sunday morning followed up by a coffee with your cycle buddies down at Maccas. So today’s image features both profanity and a bike… although I did “PG13” the swearing, I think I’ll make this one a t-shirt and ramp it up to “MA15+”.
Tomorrow will be #31 in the One a Day saga and I’ll be officially calling that one month of images. Only 11 more months to go! To celebrate this momentous(?) occasion, five lucky people will score a Sugar Skull Gorilla sticker… but there will be a catch! π
Today’s illustration is for my little daughter Neave. She was very chuffed with her Leeroy Lion t-shirt and asked if she could have a butterfly t-shirt as well and seeing I’m such a soft-touch here is Neave’s butterfly which will feature as the new Creative Panic t-shirt very soon!
As for the style, I heard the 90’s were coming back and man, if they do I’m digging out my old flannel, ripped jeans, converse high-tops and Mud Honey albums!
Today’s image is a bit of a tribute to a favourite band of mine, Joy Division. The first time I heard a Joy Division song was actually Nine Inch Nails cover of Dead Souls from The Crow Soundtrack. From that song I went out a grabbed the two Joy Division albums and have had the band on high rotation ever since.
I drew this one today as I recently watched Control, the Ian Curtis/JD biopic that was made a few years ago…. check out Joy Division playing Transmission on The Wedge back in the day:
Joy Divisions iconic album art from their LP Unknown Pleasures, designed by legend Peter Saville is still regarded as a classic.
UFO’s are cool. There really is no denying that. They have outreach programs to redneck communities im America’s mid-west, they keep our bovine population from overcrowding and are kind enough to come and mow our field’s now and then (and get creative in the process!). So today’s illustration is a tip of the old tin-foil hat to our Alien brethren up there in the sky plotting our destruction and/or acceptance into the Intergalactic Council of Populated Planets. Enjoy!
I wanted to break from the normal square-shaped canvas I’ve used of late and this image really lent itself to a long shape. I also couldn’t decide on the colour for this one so I did a few different ones you can check out:
The Creative Panic is all about me mixing it up, getting away from the daily grind and having fun with illustration. I’d say I’m still finding my style, so I love to try different drawing styles from time to time. Today’s illustration, while nowhere near a technical masterpiece is honestly the most fun I’ve had with drawing for a while. Quick, loose lines with no use of CONTROL-Z (the modern eraser!) from start to finish.
I was sitting here, working away with iTunes on shuffle and Gold Canary by Cloud Control came on (the previous song was Closer by Nine Inch Nails and I really didn’t want to try to illustrate those lyrics if you know what I mean!) I grabbed the wacom pen, opened Illustrator and just went for it… a quickly as I could! I had a smile on my face for the 11 minutes it took to draw the thing (11 minutes because that’s how long it takes to play Gold Canary three times through!). I really dig the naΓ―ve feel of it, messy and chaotic.
And it’s a bird, WTF is it about me and birds at the moment… π
I’ve just got back home after doing the Kingston S.E. Short Course Triathlon. Nothing like a swim, ride and run to make you feel like you alive, and then dead, and then alive again, then in need of an ambulance and finally, alive again. Did the 500m swim, 13.3km bike and 3.6km run in 58 minutes and 45 seconds. I am really the worst swimmer in history and every triathlon I do I get very panicky half way through the swim and my stroke goes to the dogs/sharks. But I really enjoying doing them so the more I do the better I’ll get!
So today’s image was actually done late last night while I was in my motel room trying to get to sleep in preparation for the race! Once again, no wacom board this time so it’s all just bezier-pen tool. Go easy on it, it’s not my best! I’m continuing the avian theme with CHICKEN DISCO… he likes to disco. A lot.
